Rev. Haywood Barnes, Jr. was born in Rocky Mount, N. C. to the late Haywood and Pearl Barnes. He attended the public schools there and graduated from George Washington Carver in 1959.
After which he enlisted in the US. Armed Services and retired from the Air Force after twenty years. Retirement led him to Newport News, VA. He joined and served under Rev. Herbert Hill and Rev Ivan Harris at First Baptist Denbigh as deacon, Sunday school teacher, male chorus, prison ministry director and associate minister.
In 1980 he became employed with the Newport News City Prison Farm, there he performed duties as a medic, correctional officer, and chaplain. During those twenty-one years Rev. Barnes heard his call to the ministry, found his niche, and joyfully set out to do the will of his Heavenly Father. He served as Senior Pastor of First Morning Star Baptist Church, Gloucester, VA from 2002 to2009. Presently serving as Assistant Pastor at Calvary Chapel Newport News.
He holds a BA in Human Resources from Saint Leo, a Master in Religious Education and a Doctorate in Pastoral Counseling from Andersonville Theological Seminary, Camilla, Georgia. He received a certificate from the Atlanta Chaplaincy Training School in Atlanta, GA, one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education from Riverside Hospital, Newport News, VA, and numerous hours of training to better serve mankind. He has a list of certificates, accolades, plaques, and awards… his greatest appreciation is his BA freely given in the summer of 1979 by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Presently he is married and has been married to the former Elaine Braswell for over fifty years. They reside in Newport News, VA. They have two daughters, sons-in law, four grandchildren, two great-grand and many adopted sons and daughters.
He is presently involved in:

· Abolitionist of Human Trafficking
· Bible Study Teacher
· Prostate Cancer Presentation
· Jail and Prison ministry
Now that all is said his true confession is Romans 1:16 "For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”
